As I was searching for local travel finds, I met a fine young lady who made it her mission to help preserve the dying Batak tribe and art of Puerto Princesa in Palawan.
Batak is a Cuyonon term for “mountain living”. The tribesmen can’t read nor write making it difficult for them to thrive with the demands of the lowlands or the city.
Through her, I knew of their story and how today, only 10 out of 29 recorded Batak weaving designs are known and woven. This is how the art is slowly dying. The weaving style die with the artisans who has not passed on the skill.
Lara of Batak Crafts has been liaising between Palawan and Manila to help the tribe earn a living through weaving baskets the Bataks know very well.
For every basket that you purchase to beautify and organize your home or workplace, you are feeding the dying tribe of Batak. You are also encouraging them to keep their basket weaving art alive. You are keeping a Filipino art and culture alive for the future generations to experience.
